72h in ITALY: Trip to VERONA

Dante's statue in Verona Italy

On our second day in Italy, after the short morning visit to Garda lake and Sirmione, the plan was to visit Verona. Verona is the second largest city in Veneto region and the third largest in northeast Italy. It's indeed a lovely and very lively city, with really pretty architecture, smart blend of ancient and modern, a lot of restaurants and coffee shops, a lot of fashion shops... Yet it seems that Verona is mostly famous for being the romantic setting of William Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet". House of Juliet is here, and her well-known balcony. Large Roman amphitheater is also here...

La casa di Giulietta, might be the most famous and most visited location in Verona. Juliet's House is a 14th century residence with a tiny balcony overlooking a courtyard. What's interesting is that no one knows for sure if Shakespeare ever visited Verona or Italy at all, but his plays are the reason why so many people visit this city. Maybe because everyone is still searching for the true love...

Verona's Arena (Arena di Verona) huge Roman amphitheater

Verona's Arena (Arena di Verona) is a tremendous Roman amphitheater from the 1st century, which in ancient times could accommodate about 25,000 visitors who enthusiastically watched the shows and gladiator games. It's the third largest amphitheater in Italy, and we all know the biggest one is Rome's Colosseum. Nowadays its beautiful interior is used for hosting the concerts, fairs, theater and opera performances during the warmer days. I've always loved this kind of monumental buildings...

You see, Verona is really a wonderful city but the truth is- I personally may have expected a bit more. Just as I expect from Rome, Milan or Florence- all these Italian cities that I still haven't visited and seen in the right way. I can not explain exactly what, but let's say it's that inexplicable charm and fascination that you simply feel the first time you see a city...
